What is Family Mediation?

Family mediation is an alternative method of seeking resolution for couples and families when they experience relationship breakdowns.

It is a process that involves a mediator, who is there to guide and support those needing to find a resolution through their divorce, civil partnership dissolution or separation. This is where Thursfields Family Mediation can help you. Our highly trained Family Mediators can guide and support you through the stages of mediation in a calm environment, providing the opportunity for confidentiality and open conversation between all parties.

How Can Family Mediation Benefit You?

Mediation can assist when family situations have become strained. It provides a calm, neutral and impartial environment for those involved to discuss their issues and find a resolution that is right for the whole family, not just the individual.

It is often found that the process of mediation is the quickest path to resolution, making it a cost effective and a less confrontational process for many. It is also vital to note that before most applications to the Family Court can be made, parties have to attend a Mediation Information and Assessment meeting with a mediator before proceedings can be issued.

How Thursfields Family Mediation Can Help You

Our mediators can help and guide you through the mediation process when required.

Each family and individual has their own unique set of circumstances. With this in mind, our Mediators take the time to understand you and your family’s needs and ensure that the mediation experience is tailored to meet those needs and your future requirements.

There are various approaches to mediation that can be taken depending on what best fits you and your particular circumstances. These include a more traditional style of mediation which involves couples attending mediation on their own, or hybrid mediation where your solicitors can also be in attendance. There are also situations where it may be appropriate for there to be an element of child-inclusive mediation where your child is also involved in the process. We will work with you to find what the best approach is for you and your family.

Do Agreements in Mediation Services Become Legally Binding?

The aim of mediation is to reach an outcome that puts your whole family first, finding solutions and a working set of proposals based on the discussions had.

These proposals are then recorded by our family mediators and incorporated into either a Memorandum of Understanding (for financial matters) and/or Parenting Plan (for child arrangements). Where necessary, proposals set out in the Memorandum of Understanding can also be incorporated into a Court Order that is legally binding.
